US Scales Back Military Drills with South Korea Amid Tensions with Iran and North Korea
The US has reduced its joint military exercises with South Korea, citing the country's failure to help combat Iran and President Trump's 'very good relationship' with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The US has scaled back its joint military exercises with South Korea, a move that has raised concerns about the country's commitment to regional security.
The decision to reduce the 11-day Ulchi Freedom Shield drills was made by President Trump, who cited Seoul's alleged failure to help combat Iran and his own "very good relationship" with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
"These exercises are not only costly, with much of these costs paid for by the United States of America (as usual!), but send a signal that is totally inappropriate and hostile, to a Country that, as long as Donald J. Trump has been President, has been unthreatening and respectful," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The US has previously viewed the Ulchi Freedom Shield drills as an opportunity to reinforce the US-South Korea alliance and reaffirm the commitment to defend their homelands.
However, the decision to reduce the scale of the drills has been seen as a direct response to North Korea's threat to respond with a "new level of a deterrent" to the exercises.
## North Korea's Threats
North Korea has accused the US and South Korean forces of plotting more provocative exercises for later this year, calling the drills a "rehearsal for an aggressive war".
Pyongyang has vowed to respond with a "new level of a deterrent", which would likely include more ballistic missile tests in nearby waters.
## US-Iran Relations
The decision to reduce the scale of the Ulchi Freedom Shield drills is also seen as a move to appease North Korea and potentially convince the country to rejoin nuclear disarmament talks.
However, experts say that the war has instead transformed into a battle over the Strait of Hormuz, with Iran remaining in talks with Oman about control of the strategic waterway.
## Israel-Hamas Peace Talks
Meanwhile, the US has renewed its push for Israel-Hamas peace talks, with White House advisor Jared Kushner meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem on Monday.
The talks aimed to break a recent impasse in US-mediated negotiations to end the war in Gaza, with Hamas refusing to relinquish its weapons and Israel continuing to encroach into Gaza beyond the agreed-upon cease-fire line.
